Annual Literacy Volunteers at Centenary College Scrabble Tournament is March 14

SHREVEPORT, LA — The Literacy Volunteers at Centenary College (LVCC) organization is sponsoring its 13th annual Scrabble Tournament Saturday, March 14, on the Centenary College campus. All proceeds will benefit the Literacy Volunteers in their fight to end adult illiteracy.

What: Scrabble Tournament

When: March 14, 2020 – Registration begins at noon, play starts at 1:00 p.m.

Where: Kilpatrick Auditorium, Centenary campus

Entry Fee: $25 per player for adults; $10 for students

Teams of two players each will compete in either a beginner or intermediate division. Each team is guaranteed three rounds of Scrabble play and all players are provided with refreshments. The first place team in each division receives $200, and the second place team receives $100.

At least 28 percent of the adult population in Louisiana is functionally illiterate, one of the highest rates in the nation. Founded in 1984, LVCC offers a variety of free tutoring programs, all aimed at increasing the basic literacy skills of adults in Northwest Louisiana. In 2019, approximately 85 LVCC tutors helped over 250 students improve their reading and writing skills.
