Centenary to host STEAM educator symposium in February 2024
SHREVEPORT, LA — Centenary’s Education Department and Center for Teaching and Learning have partnered to create a unique and exciting event for Shreveport-Bossier City’s education community. The inaugural Full STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) Ahead Teacher Symposium for local educators will be held February 8 and 9, 2024, on the Centenary campus. The two-day event will include workshops, interactive collaborative sessions, individual presentations, panel discussions, and poster presentations. Centenary alumnus Dennis “DJ” Pevey, the 2024 Louisiana High School Teacher of the Year, will be a featured speaker at the symposium.
The Full STEAM Ahead symposium is designed to provide professional development and networking opportunities for both current and future educators. It is open to all K-12 teachers and college/university educators who work in STEAM fields, as well as administrators, community leaders, and professional development providers. Registration is $45 per person until January 5, 2024, and $60 per person until January 15. Registration and payment information is available at centenary.edu/fullsteamahead.
Symposium organizers are currently seeking presentation proposals that explore the power of connection in shaping progress and understanding. Some of the questions that attendees are asked to consider include, “How do we improve connections across disciplines, specialties, grade levels, districts, and regions?,” and “How do we build bridges from novices to mentors, schools to communities, pedagogy to practice, and curiosity to process?”
Proposals for workshops, interactive “make and take” sessions, and individual and group presentations should be submitted at centenary.edu/fullsteamahead by December 10. Invitations to presenters will be issued in early January 2024.
“The Full STEAM Ahead Teacher Symposium will focus on Kinetic Connections,” explained Dr. Terrie Johnson, chair of the Education Department at Centenary. “These are connections that exchange energy! We want to facilitate connections between STEAM content area educators, between experienced educators and new educators, between K-12 educators and higher education educators, and between community partners and educators. Ultimately these connections will benefit educators and, most importantly, students.”
