Centenary Youth Orchestra announces summer chamber music camp

SHREVEPORT, LA — Young musicians will have the chance to learn to play music with others in small groups at the Centenary Youth Orchestra (CYO) Chamber Music Camp this summer. The camp runs from Monday, June 3 through Thursday, June 6 at Centenary’s Hurley School of Music. The experience culminates with a formal recital presentation in Centenary’s Anderson Auditorium on June 6 at 6:30 p.m.

Campers will work and learn with peers of comparable levels through exposure to high-quality chamber music literature. They will develop listening skills, cooperative performance skills, and enhanced expressive abilities and musicianship. All students will attend one daily Music Theory class and one ensemble coaching session, with all instruction provided by professional teacher/musicians from Centenary’s Hurley School of Music and the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra.

“The camp was started to provide an opportunity for young musicians to experience the joy I had when learning to play chamber music,” says Dan Santelices, director of the CYO. “Playing your own part and fitting it with others can be a challenge. I wanted give our wonderful area professional musicians and music teachers an opportunity to help guide the players through the process. I am amazed at the independence students gain and the friendships that often occur in this shared experience. Many have returned each year to participate even after graduating from high school."

The CYO Chamber Music Camp will also offer the Fiddle Faddle! elective class for all levels of strings. Fiddle Faddle! students will learn to play and perform fiddle and folk tunes with movement and basic dance steps, and will show off their work during the final concert on June 6.

Tuition for the Chamber Music Camp is $150 per student. Students can add the Fiddle Faddle! elective for $25, and there is also an option to take only Fiddle Faddle! for $35. The deadline for applications is May 11 and there is a $10 late fee for registrations after that date. All 2018-2019 Centenary Youth Orchestra members receive a $15 discount on tuition at the camp.

All campers need a recommendation from their school music teacher or private instrument instructor to participate in the camp, and must also meet a set of minimum note-reading requirements. The majority of students are ten years old and up and have been playing for at least two years, but students adept at note reading and learning music have been as young as six in the past.
