Meadows Museum of Art at Centenary College launches new digital archive

SHREVEPORT, LA — Centenary College’s Meadows Museum of Art has announced a significant enhancement to its permanent collection accessibility. A new online database now provides public access to collection pieces, allowing Centenary students and the general public to explore the collection with greater ease and efficiency.

The initial launch includes the founding collection of 360 works made by Jean Despujols during his 1930s tour of Indochina. Gifted by Algur H. Meadows in 1969, this collection serves as the cornerstone of the museum. The database features images of each work along with descriptions and keyword searches. Over time, more artworks from the 1,600-item collection will be added.

“I am very excited that we are giving the public access to our collection online,” said Kristin Sorensen, collections manager at the Meadows. “I feel it's an incredible opportunity to showcase the Meadows in new ways to new audiences. The artists whose work we hold deserve to be seen by more than just the staff here; we want it to be enjoyed by anyone.”

Aligning with the museum's mission to engage the community through innovative academic discourse on the arts, the online database will impact how people interact with the collection in several ways:

  • Enhanced Exhibition Development: Students and researchers can now directly browse our collection online, facilitating more effective and autonomous curatorial work.
  • Streamlined Class Visits: Professors and students can preview items and plan their visits more efficiently, saving time and enhancing the educational experience.
  • Improved Public Interaction: Visitors can search for specific pieces before their visit, allowing for a more personalized experience and ensuring that memorable artworks are readily available.
  • Class Projects: Students and faculty can now access high-quality images and detailed descriptions of our collection online, enhancing research, presentations, and class exhibits with greater flexibility and depth.
  • Off Campus Programs: The digital archive allows museum staff to take the collections into the public, to audiences who cannot easily visit the museum in person.
