Opera Centenary presents fall program November 15 and 16 at Anderson Auditorium
SHREVEPORT, LA — Opera Centenary, a program of the College’s Hurley School of Music, will present Scenes 2: Experimental Universe at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, November 15, and Saturday, November 16, in Anderson Auditorium. The performance features opera, operetta, and musical theater scenes by a variety of composers. The event is free and open to the public.
Opera Centenary debuted the Scenes series in November 2023 with A Couple of Love Songs. Scenes 2: Experimental Universe presents some familiar pieces and stories, staged with a twist.
“We explore taking stories out of context and putting them into unexpected time periods, themes, and settings,” explained Dr. Briana Sosenheimer, Opera Centenary director and assistant professor of music. “We recontextualized scenes to approach the story and acting from a different perspective. It was an intentional challenge to expand the students' interpretation skills.”
Students participating in the Opera Centenary program have found the experience to be rewarding and enjoyable.
"Opera Centenary is truly a wonderful family,” said Anna McCann, a junior from Bossier City, Louisiana. “It allowed me to get out of my shell and truly enjoy singing and performing again."
Jaszmyne Jackson, a freshman from Bossier City, loves the fun and sometimes unpredictable atmosphere.
"I always look forward to going to my Opera Centenary class because I never know if we're going to just be practicing our music performance pieces or if we're going to be playing some wacky, silly character!” said Jackson. “No matter what we do; I always end up laughing, enjoying myself, and having a fun time!"
