Photographer Odette England to visit Centenary’s Meadows Museum of Art March 18
SHREVEPORT, LA — The Meadows Museum of Art at Centenary College will host “A Conversation with Odette England,” featuring photographer Odette England. The event is Wednesday, March 18, at 6:00 p.m. at the Museum. It is free and open to the public.
“The Meadows is eagerly looking forward to Odette England's upcoming visit,” says Heather F. Wetzel, director of the Museum. “During her short yet busy time here, she will be meeting with several classes on campus, as well as a small group of local photographers and photography enthusiasts. Her talk at the Meadows, accompanied by many images, will not disappoint.”
England will discuss her newly published book, Keepers of the Hearth: Picturing Roland Barthe's Unseen Photograph, on the 40th anniversary of Barthe's seminal text "The Camera Lucida.” Barthe's book describes looking for a photograph of his mother after her death that captures her essence. When he finally finds one, he describes it but does not reproduce it in his book. Keepers of the Hearth is England's response, presenting a multitude of compelling visual interpretations by over 200 photographically based artists, writers, critics, curators, and historians of what that unseen photograph described in Barthe's book means to them.
England is currently a visiting assistant professor of design at Rhode Island School of Design. She received an MFA with honors from the Rhode Island School of Design and earned a Ph.D. from the Australian National University. Her photographs have shown in over 90 exhibitions in venues including the George Eastman House, Museum of Contemporary Photography, and the New Mexico Museum of Art. She lives and works in Rhode Island and New York.
Copies of Keepers of the Hearth will be available to purchase at the March 18 event.
Four exhibits are currently on display at the Meadows Museum and run through April 18, 2020. For more information, visit themeadowsmuseum.com.
