Shreveport artist Maria Markell opens exhibition at Meadows Museum of Art

SHREVEPORT, LA — Artist and educator Maria Markell’s photography exhibition, The Beauty of North Louisiana, opened this week as the second installment in the Meadows Museum of Art’s Project Gallery Space, a versatile gallery showcasing short-term exhibits by local artists. Markell’s photographs showcasing the variety of textures, colors, flora, and fauna found at Caddo Lake will be on display through October 30 in the Project Gallery Space.

Markell, a native of North Carolina, moved to Shreveport in 2000 and has played an active role in the local art community as an art instructor and administrator in addition to being an award-winning artist in her own right. She is the director of the Noel Community Arts Program, an art and music non-profit located in the Highland neighborhood. Markell is listed in the Shreveport Regional Arts Council’s Northwest Louisiana Artist Directory and works in variety of genres, including painting, mosaic, found object assemblage, and photography.

“I enjoy creating images that show subjects that may have gone unnoticed in our fast-paced world,” Markell wrote in her artist statement for the Project Gallery space exhibition. “The first time I was on Caddo Lake, I was so enamored by its beauty. I HAD to photograph it. I am honored to be able to share these photographs and let you see what I saw through my eyes.”
