Workshop on March 7 concludes Centenary's masculinties seminar series
SHREVEPORT, LA — The final event in Centenary’s three part seminar series exploring masculinities, a partnership with The Men’s Story Project, is an interactive workshop with Men’s Story Project founder/director Dr. Jocelyn Lehrer. Lehrer will address topics of masculinities, health, and social justice in a lecture, film screening, and discussion format at the culminating event on Thursday, March 7, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the Whited Room at Centenary. The keynote address is free and open to the public, and light snacks will be provided. Passport Points will be available for Centenary students who attend.
Lehrer will also meet with students earlier in the day on March 7 to discuss her journey from studying public health to founding the Men’s Story Project. Lehrer is a public health and social justice researcher and practitioner with over 20 years of experience working across the United States as well as Latin America, Africa and the Middle East. She has expertise in areas including gender equality, feminist movement-building, gender-based violence prevention and response, and the promotion of positive masculinities and sexual/reproductive health and rights.
In addition to founding and directing the Men’s Story Project, a bold movement-building project that engages men for positive masculinities and social justice, Lehrer has also worked and consulted with organizations including UN Women, USAID, MTV, the University of California – San Francisco Center for Global Reproductive Health, and the Stanford Global Center for Gender Equality. She earned a doctoral degree from the Harvard School of Public Health.
“I’m excited to come to Centenary to talk with students, faculty and community members about how social ideas about masculinity are linked with diverse health and social justice issues, and how we can all promote healthier notions of masculinity in our own lives and communities,” said Dr. Lehrer. “It’s not a subject people often talk about, and it affects well-being and equality for everyone. I look forward to our conversations!”
The seminar series opened on January 23, with “Exploring Masculinities,” an interdisciplinary workshop led by Centenary professors, and continued on February 27 with a panel discussion featuring Centenary alumni and community members. Additional details about the seminar series are available at centenary.edu/masculinities.
