During your advisee’s junior year you should begin discussing post-graduation options, including graduate school opportunities and career options. To mentor your student on their post-graduation plans, you may want to:
- Refer your advisee to the Office of Career Services
- Help them explore internship opportunities
- Research graduate and professional school options, and review application requirements with your advisee.
- Determine which standardized tests your advisee may be required to take in order to enter the graduate or professional program of their choice, and how to prepare
- Determine if your advisee’s chosen career path requires any certifications, and if so, how to prepare
- Encourage your advisee to talk to, interview, or shadow local professionals in the career of their interest.
Junior Advising for Fall Semester
By the time that students enroll for junior year courses in the spring of their second year, your advisee should already have:
- Declared a major and selected a major advisor. If not, complete the paperwork for this. https://www.centenary.edu/files/resources/majororadvisorchangeform.pdf
- Started a degree plan. If not, work with your student to fill out a degree plan. Keep a copy for yourself, and provide one for the student. Degree plans should be filed with the Registrar’s Office as soon as possible once the student has declared a major, and no later than the start of their Senior Year. Filing a degree plan early allows you and your advisee to anticipate and resolve any enrollment issues that might otherwise delay progress toward graduation. One thing to discuss with your advisee at this point is whether they are interested in a minor field of study. If so, work with the student to identify a minor advisor, and to chart a course of study to complete the minor. In the event that a student’s plans change, a revised degree plan can be filed with the Registrar’s office.
Before your advising session, ask the student to make sure they have no holds on their account. They should also come prepared with a list of preferred classes, including the CRNs.
At the start of your advising session:
- Review the student’s transcript and/or degree plan. Discuss any academic or personal issues, including deficiencies.
- Review Major, Minor, Explorations, and Trek Requirements with the student using the Core Checklist, paying particular attention to requirements unique to their major field of study (ie Examination or Certification requirements, Research or Internship requirements, Language Requirements, Opportunities for Honors).
- Enroll the student in appropriate WAC, CLC, and/or MUS courses.
- Enroll the student in an appropriate Foreign Language course, if necessary.
- Fill the remainder of the student’s schedule with Major and Core courses, making sure that at least one course satisfies the L.A.B. requirement.
- Consider enrolling the student in an appropriate Trek course (Community or Career).
